Premarital Counseling: What’s the Point & Should I Care

how to build trust

Should I or shouldn’t I get premarital counseling?

Finding the person you will spend the rest of your life with is a wonderful experience, but it comes with a lot to think about. One of the things that crosses most peoples mind is whether they should get premarital counseling. Some may feel it’s unnecessary; their relationship is in a good place, and they won’t benefit from it. But is that really true?

Is counseling only something you do when you’re in relationship trouble?

I’ve found that being proactive versus reactive normally results in greater success. One can wait to go to the doctor after they get bad cholesterol, or they can go to check-ups beforehand to help prevent bad cholesterol. One can wait till they have a cavity to go to the dentist, or they periodically go to the dentist for cleanings to prevent cavities. This type of preemptive action is no different with relationships. You can wait till you’re in marital trouble to get counseling, or you can be proactive and gain insight to avoid marital trouble.

In this relationship podcast episode we highlight some of the benefits of premarital counseling, expose taboos, and point out things you should look for when picking a counselor. Listening to this podcast will give you a better idea of how preemptive counseling can help you.
